Air Fryer Chicken Breast with Prosciutto
Description
The Air Fryer Chicken Breast with Prosciutto involves seasoning boneless chicken breasts lightly with sage, salt, and pepper—keeping salt minimal due to the salty prosciutto wrapping. Each breast is wrapped with two to three slices of prosciutto, covering most of the surface, then cooked in an air fryer at 400°F for about 15 minutes, turning once. Internal temperature checks ensure doneness at 160°F or above before resting the meat.
The cooking method crisps the prosciutto outside while locking in moisture in the chicken, resulting in a juicy piece with a flavorful, slightly salty crust. The sage provides an aromatic herb note, complementing the ham-like prosciutto flavor. The air fryer shortens cooking time while creating a crisp texture on the wrapping.
This dish serves well as a main course paired simply with vegetables or side salads. The resting period after cooking helps redistribute juices inside the chicken for tenderness and flavor.
A suggestion for variation is to use fresh sage leaves in place of dried for a different herb intensity. For smaller, thinner chicken breast cutlets, reduce air frying time to about 10 minutes before checking temperature to prevent overcooking.
Ingredients
- 3 whole chicken breast boneless
- 2 tbsp sage
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 8 oz prosciutto
Instructions
- Put the boneless chicken breasts on a cutting board and sprinkle with sage, salt and pepper. Keep in mind the prosciutto is salty, so go easy on the salt. I think 1/4 t. per chicken breast is plenty.
- Wrap each breast with 2-3 slices of prosciutto, so that the prosciutto covers most of the chicken.
- Cook in the air fryer at 400F for 15 minutes, turning once.
- Check the temperature of the chicken with an instant read thermometer. If it is 160 F or above take the chicken out. Otherwise return it to the air fryer for another 2-6 minutes, depending on how close it is to done.
- Let the chicken rest for five minutes before serving.
Notes
- Using a fresh sage leaf instead of dried sage mimics a Chicken Saltimbocca style flavor.
- For smaller or thinner chicken breasts, reduce cooking time to about 10 minutes before checking internal temperature.
