Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes
Description
This recipe uses small baby potatoes cut with multiple thin slices almost all the way through, creating a fan effect that crisps in the air fryer. The potatoes are coated with olive oil mixed with garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper, which flavors the slices as they cook. Cooking at 180°C (350℉) for about 20 minutes, with a turn halfway, produces tender potatoes with crispy, well-seasoned edges without requiring oil spray in the air fryer basket.
The flavor balance highlights the mild potato sweetness enhanced by garlic and seasoning. The thin slices allow crispy texture to develop all over while keeping the centers soft. The flexible slice thickness lets you adjust how crispy versus tender the potatoes end up.
These potatoes can be served as a side with many main courses or enjoyed as a snack. Leaving the skins on enhances crispiness and provides more nutrition, but peeling is optional based on preference. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer so the potatoes crisp evenly.
Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer model and slice thickness, so you might need to add a few extra minutes for desired crispiness. Slices too thick will reduce crispiness.
Ingredients
- 400 g baby potato
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
- sea salt
- black pepper
Instructions
- Using a thin, sharp knife, make slices three quarters of the way through each potato. Try to get them as close together as possible (about 2-3mm) and make sure you don't cut all the way through.
- Mix together the oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
- Brush the potatoes all over with the oil mixture.
- Place the potatoes into the air fryer.
- Cook at 180°C/350℉ for 20 minutes, turning halfway through.
Notes
- No need to spray the air fryer basket with oil as the potatoes are well-coated and won’t stick.
- Slicing thickness affects crispiness; thinner slices crisp better while thicker may stay softer.
- Cooking times can vary; add extra minutes if the potatoes are not crisp enough.
- Leaving skins on adds crisp texture and nutrition but is optional.
- Do not overcrowd the basket to ensure potatoes crisp properly.
