Air Fryer Hawaiian Shrimp
Description
This recipe blends shrimp, ham strips, pineapple chunks, and a sauce made from honey, honey BBQ sauce, pineapple juice, and Old Bay seasoning. The sauce provides a balance of sweetness, tang, and spice that complements the seafood and pork. Ingredients can be arranged on skewers for grilling or mixed in a bowl and transferred to the air fryer basket for convenience. Coating with the sauce before cooking ensures even flavor and moisture.
Cooking at 370°F in the air fryer for 6 to 8 minutes quickly cooks the shrimp while allowing the glaze to set. The shrimp turn pink and are tender while the ham and pineapple pieces caramelize slightly from the heat and sauce sugars.
The dish serves well as an appetizer if skewered or as a main course over rice when cooked in a bowl. The recipe makes about four servings when served over rice. Keeping extra sauce on the side allows guests to adjust sweetness or tanginess to taste.
Variations include swapping the honey BBQ sauce for teriyaki or other barbecue flavors and marinating the ingredients for 15 to 30 minutes before cooking to intensify taste. The air fryer method offers a fast, tidy alternative to traditional grilling with comparable textures.
Ingredients
- 1 lb Shrimp size 18-21, jumbo
- 4-6 lices ham rolled and cut into 1 inch strips
- ½ c. pineapple chunks
- ½ c. honey
- ¼ c. honey BBQ sauce
- ¼ c. pineapple juice drained from chunks
- ½ tsp Old Bay seasoning
Instructions
Sauce
- In a medium bowl, combine honey, BBQ Sauce, juice and seasoning. Stir to mix ingredients well.
Skewers Directions
- Skewer shrimp, ham, and pineapple, until the skewer is filled. Use a pastry brush or spoon to coat skewers with sauce. Rotate skewers to make sure both sides are covered with sauce. Place skewers on rack and place in basket.
Bowl Directions
- In a large bowl, combine shrimp, ham, and pineapple, cover with sauce. Use a large spoon or spatula to gently toss the ingredients to make sure the sauce has covered each piece thoroughly. Scoop to transfer into basket, and pour any sauce still in the bowl over the shrimp mixture. (You can also marinate for 15 minutes before transferring to basket).
Cooking Instructions
- Preheat fryer 370 degrees for 4 minutes
- Place kabobs or shrimp bowl ingredients in air fryer basket. Cook for 6-8 minutes until shrimp are pink.
- Serve as an appetizer or over rice. (If served over rice, this makes 4 servings. If skewered, this prepares 10-14 skewers)
Notes
- Honey BBQ sauce can be substituted with teriyaki or other BBQ sauces depending on preferred flavor.
- Use pineapple juice and honey to add natural sweetness without relying solely on sauce.
- For stronger flavor, marinate shrimp, ham, and pineapple in sauce for 15 to 30 minutes before cooking.
- Skewers work well as appetizers; cooking all ingredients together is convenient for family meals.
- Reserve some sauce to serve on the side so diners can adjust sweetness or tanginess to their liking.
