Air Fryer Hush Puppies
Description
This recipe for Air Fryer Hush Puppies starts with a cornmeal and flour base seasoned with garlic salt, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and minced onion to build savory flavor. Cream-style corn adds moistness and sweetness. The batter is shaped into small balls, rolled in cornmeal for extra texture, and chilled to help them keep their shape during cooking. Cooking at 400 degrees in an air fryer crisps the exterior evenly with a light spray of oil, creating a golden crust without deep frying. Turning the puppies midway helps them brown on all sides evenly. The result is a hush puppy with a lightly crispy exterior and a soft, tender interior that showcases familiar Southern flavors and texture without the heaviness of frying in oil.
These hush puppies can be served alongside fried fish, barbecue, or as a snack. Their crisping in the air fryer lets them stay lighter than traditional fried versions, which might appeal when you want the taste without the added oil. Rolling in cornmeal provides additional crunch and rustic texture. They are best eaten fresh for the best contrast between the crisp outside and the moist inside.
Because air fryer models may vary, the recipe suggests checking for doneness and adding additional cooking time if needed to ensure they are golden brown and cooked through. Chilling the hush puppies before air frying helps hold their shape and promotes an evenly cooked interior. The use of cooking spray oil encourages browning and helps prevent sticking without heavy oil absorption.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal yellow
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 Tablespoons onion minced
- 1 .25 ounces cream style corn
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg large
- Cooking spray oil
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mix the Corn meal, flour, baking powder, garlic salt and cayenne pepper until well blended.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until mixed. Stir in the minced onion and cream style corn.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix together.
- Place about a cup of corn meal in a shallow bowl and roll the hush puppies into small balls, then roll in the corn meal, and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
- Place hush puppies in the freezer for 30 minutes.
- Remove from freezer, and place in the Air Fryer basket.
- Spray the hush puppies with the spray oil, set the temperature to 400 degrees, and set the time to 10 minutes.
- Check the hush puppies half way through cooking and turn the hush puppies, and spray again with the spray oil.
- Since Air Fryer's differ in cooking, make sure the hush puppies are cooked golden brown out side and are done in the middle. This may require additional time. Add 3 minutes, and cook again if not done.
- Continue until hush puppies are completely done in the center.
- When hush puppies are done, sprinkle with finely minced parsley. Enjoy!
