Air Fryer Rutabaga Fries

Air Fryer Rutabaga Fries are a crisp alternative to potato fries, made by peeling and cutting rutabaga into half-inch sticks, tossing them with vegetable oil and Cajun seasoning, then air frying until golden and crispy. The fries develop a satisfying texture with a slightly sweet root flavor, best served hot alongside dips like ketchup. This recipe suggests cooking in batches for even crisping and offers tips for baking as well.

Description

This recipe transforms rutabaga into fries by peeling the root vegetable and slicing it into uniform strips about ½ inch thick to optimize crispness. The fries are tossed with a small amount of vegetable oil and a Cajun seasoning blend, coating them evenly for flavor and aiding in browning during cooking. Using an air fryer at 400°F, the fries cook in about 20 minutes, with frequent basket shaking recommended to promote even cooking and prevent sogginess.

The result is a set of fries that have a crisp exterior and tender interior. The natural sweetness of rutabaga complements the spiced seasoning, creating a snack or side that offers a different root vegetable experience from traditional potato fries. Serving them hot maintains the best texture and flavor.

Practical advice includes cutting fries thinner for more crispness, cooking in batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket, and reheating leftovers in the air fryer to regain crispness. Alternatively, an oven method with baking on a parchment-lined sheet at 400°F for 30 minutes is provided, turning halfway through.

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the rutabaga into ½ inch fries. (See post for instructions)
