Air Fryer Sausage Rolls

Air Fryer Sausage Rolls use puff pastry filled with seasoned sausage meat and tomato puree, rolled and cut into portions before being cooked in an air fryer. The tomato puree adds moisture and flavor inside the flaky pastry, which crisps in the air fryer. Egg wash enhances browning on the surface, delivering a golden crust. These sausage rolls have a savory, juicy filling and tender, flaky exterior, ideal as a snack or appetizer.

Description

The recipe involves rolling out defrosted puff pastry into a rectangle, then slicing it lengthwise to create strips. Tomato puree is brushed along the strips, avoiding the edges where egg wash will be applied. Sausage meat is pressed evenly over the tomato layer. After sealing with egg wash, the pastry is rolled tightly to encase the filling.

Depending on size preference, the rolls are cut into smaller portions for baking. Egg wash is brushed on top to encourage an even golden crust during air frying. Cooking in the air fryer provides a crispy exterior with less oil compared to traditional baking methods.

The result is sausage rolls with a juicy, flavorful meat interior complemented by flaky, browned pastry. These can be enjoyed warm as finger food or part of a larger meal spread.

Egg wash leftovers can be saved for breakfast omelets. The dough and filling preparation steps lend well to make-ahead assembly and cooking when desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 450 g sausage meat tube form
  • 2 Tbsp tomato puree
  • 1 egg Beaten
  • 1 kg puff pastry defrosted at room temperature, block
  • flour for dusting

Kitchen Gadgets

  • Cosori Air Fryer

Instructions

  1. Let’s make this sausage roll air fryer recipe. Dust a clean worktop with flour and dust your rolling pin.
  2. Roll the puff pastry into a long and wide rectangle.
  3. Slice in half lengthways to create two long strips for your sausage rolls.
  4. Using a pastry brush, brush a layer of tomato puree across both strips of pastry, staying away from the edges as that is where the egg wash will go.
  5. Next add a layer in the middle of where the tomato puree is with sausage meat and press down until you have a long layer on each pastry sheet. Then clean your brush and then use it again to add a layer around the edges of the egg wash. Roll the sausage rolls – going from one side to the other creating a 100% roll and then tuck in any edges.
  6. For the batch of full sized sausage rolls chop in half and then half again to make four quarters.
  7. For the mini sausage rolls batch chop them into quarters then quarter each quarter to create 16 mini sausage rolls. Next brush egg wash on the tops and sides of the sausage rolls and use scissors for a little cut in the top of each sausage roll.
  8. Place the full sized sausage rolls into the air fryer and air fry for 10 minutes at 180c/360f. Then add extra egg wash to the top and then air fry for a further 3 minutes at 200c/400f or until golden to your liking.
  9. If making mini sausage rolls in air fryer reduce the cook time to 8 minutes at 200c/400f and make sure none are on top of each other.
  10. Then once brown to your liking they are ready to be served.

Notes

  • Use beaten egg as an egg wash applied carefully to edges and tops for golden color and sealing; leftover egg wash can be saved for omelets.
  • Roll puff pastry on a floured surface to prevent sticking and ensure even thickness.
  • Cut rolls according to desired size: full-sized or mini versions are possible.
  • Cooking sausage rolls in the air fryer yields flaky, crispy pastry with less oil than traditional baking.
  • Allow dough to fully defrost at room temperature before rolling for easier handling.
  • This recipe is suitable for preparing parts in advance to speed up cooking times later.
