Air Fryer Tandoori Chicken

Air Fryer Tandoori Chicken features skinless marinated drumsticks coated in a blend of yogurt, spices, and lemon juice. The chicken is air-fried to achieve a flavorful crust and juicy interior. Using an air fryer offers a convenient and less oily alternative to traditional grilling or oven roasting for this Indian-inspired dish.

Description

This recipe prepares chicken drumsticks by removing the skin and cutting slits for marinade penetration. The marinade combines plain yogurt with ginger and garlic paste, Kashmiri red chili powder, turmeric, garam masala, salt, dried fenugreek leaves crushed by hand, and lemon juice. Coating the chicken in this mixture and allowing it to marinate for at least 20 minutes or up to 24 hours ensures deep infusion of spice and tang.

The air frying process at 350°F cooks the chicken for 15 minutes with a light spray of oil, resulting in a crisp exterior and tender inside. The slits in the drumsticks help the marinade seep into the meat, while skin removal reduces greasiness. The spice blend provides aromatic warmth and bright heat balanced by yogurt’s creaminess.

These tandoori chicken drumsticks can be served as a main course or appetizer and pair well with chutneys, rice, or flatbreads. The air fryer method offers a practical way to enjoy a traditionally grilled preparation with less cleanup and less oil.

According to notes, the size of the air fryer basket affects the cooking volume; avoid overcrowding for even cooking. Cook times may vary between air fryer models; a digital thermometer is recommended to verify the internal temperature. Additional cooking time should be added if needed. This attention ensures the chicken is fully cooked and safe to eat.

Ingredients

  • 6 chicken drumstick
  • cup PLAIN yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon Kashmiri red chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon Turmeric ground
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon fenugreek leaves Kasoori methi, dried, aka Kasoori Methi
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • cooking oil spray

Instructions

  1. Pat dry the chicken drumsticks with a paper towel. Then using 2 pieces of paper towels, pick up one drumstick and pull the skin down from the thickest part of the chicken to the narrow end and remove the skin. Repeat for the remaining chicken drumsticks. Paper towels will help you get a grip on the skin and remove it easily.
  2. Make 3-4 slits across the thick part on each drumstick.
  3. Add yogurt, ginger, garlic, red chili powder, turmeric, garam masala, and salt. Place the dried fenugreek leaves on the palm of your hands and gently crush them rubbing the hands together. Add to the chicken. Add lemon juice and mix everything coating the chicken with the marinade
  4. Allow the chicken to marinate for at least 20 minutes or you can also marinate in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil. Line the marinated chicken in the basket and spray with oil.
  6. Air fry at 350°F for 15 minutes. Shake the basket halfway and lightly spray with oil.
  7. Once the cooking cycle is completed check the internal temperature of the thickest piece and make sure it's at 165°F. You may continue to cook the chicken or add 1 to 2 minutes for charred marks but make sure not to overcook.
  8. Serve with fresh lemon wedges, cilantro mint chutney. Pair it with the crunchy cucumber salad for a delicious low carb meal.
