Air Fryer Whole Chicken
Description
The recipe features a whole 1.5 kg chicken rubbed with olive oil combined with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. The mustard seasoning blend is simple, keeping the focus on the chicken's natural flavor enhanced by a lightly spiced crust. Cooking begins with the chicken breast side down in the air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for 30 minutes, then flipping it breast side up for another 20 to 25 minutes. This technique encourages even cooking and skin crisping on both sides.
After cooking, resting the chicken for 10 minutes allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in moist and tender meat. The air fryer method reduces cooking time compared to traditional roasting while still producing a well-browned, flavorful whole chicken.
This chicken pairs well as a main dish with vegetables, or it can be carved for sandwiches or salads. The notes suggest ways to manage chicken size for the air fryer basket, to dry the chicken before seasoning for better crisping, and to save pan juices for cooking vegetables or making gravy.
Removing giblets before cooking is advised to ensure even cooking and safety.
Ingredients
- 1.5 kg chicken whole
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 1 pinch black pepper
Instructions
- Add 2 tablespoon Olive oil, 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder, 1 teaspoon Paprika and 1 pinch Sea salt and ground black pepper to a small bowl. Mix well to combine everything.
- Starting breast side up, rub t1.5 kg Whole chicken with half of the oil mixture. Flip over and rub the remaining oil mix over the underside.
- Place the chicken, breast side down, into the air fryer basket. Cook at 180°C for 30 minutes.
- Using tongs or two forks, carefully flip the chicken over.
- Cook breast side up at 180°C/350℉ for a further 20-25 minutes.
- Carefully remove the chicken from the air fryer and let rest for 10 minutes before carving.
Notes
- Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes after cooking to retain juices and ensure tenderness.
- Cooking times vary by air fryer model and chicken size; starting with 45 minutes total is recommended before checking.
- Pat the chicken dry prior to seasoning to promote crisp skin.
- If the chicken is too big for the basket, gently press down until the breastbone cracks to help it fit.
- Reserve juices from the air fryer basket to cook vegetables or make gravy during resting time.
- Remove giblets from inside the chicken cavity before cooking.
