Amish Sugar Cookie Recipe

Amish Sugar Cookies are tender, buttery cookies made from a rich dough combining butter, vegetable oil, sugars, eggs, and vanilla, blended with flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt. These cookies bake to lightly browned bottoms with a delicate, soft texture. The dough is dropped by teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet and baked briefly for a classic sugar cookie result suitable for everyday baking or simple gatherings.

Description

This recipe mixes softened butter and vegetable oil with both granulated and powdered sugars to create a smooth base. Eggs are added one at a time followed by vanilla extract to add moisture and flavor. The dry ingredients consist of all-purpose flour combined with baking soda, cream of tartar for slight acidity, and salt to balance sweetness. Mixing the wet and dry components until just combined preserves tenderness.

The dough is scooped onto greased cookie sheets in small portions and baked at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes. Baking stops when the bottoms develop a light golden hue, preventing over-browning while ensuring a soft inside. The cookies cool on racks to finish setting. An optional glaze can be drizzled on top for added sweetness and visual appeal.

The cookies have a classic sugar cookie flavor: buttery, mildly sweet, and tender with a slight chew from the balanced fat blend of butter and oil. They lend themselves well to decorating or serving with beverages like tea or coffee.
