Among Us Cake
Description
This cake is composed of alternating vanilla cake layers with buttercream filling colored in shades like white and purple for visual interest in the slices. The exterior is smoothly covered in black-tinted buttercream applied using a cake scraper for evenness. Decoration involves piping small, precise dots or shapes to represent stars, made either with buttercream or white confetti sprinkles pressed onto the surface.
The signature characters from Among Us are created by piping brightly colored buttercream using small piping bags with narrow openings alongside stencils or freehand drawing outlines with a toothpick, offering customization for desired colors or designs. The black outer layer provides a stark background that highlights the pastel colors within and the characters on the exterior.
The recipe recommends using the best buttercream recipe with room temperature butter for smoothness and chill the cake slightly to aid in smoothing character details. Alternative sprinkles or a themed cake topper can also be used for added embellishment.
Ingredients
- 1 Vanilla Cake
- 1 1/2 batches buttercream frosting
- Food Coloring
- confetti sprinkles optional, white
Instructions
- Divide buttercream into two batches. Color one with black food coloring for covering the cake and the other can remain white or be colored for the filling. I used both white and purple for the cake’s interior.
- Pipe buttercream onto the first cake layer then add a layer on top and continue building the cake layers. You can add some visual interest by piping rings of different colors for the cake’s interior.
- Cover the cake with black buttercream and smooth it until the cake is evenly covered using a cake scraper.
- Either press white confetti sprinkles on top or pipe little dots of white buttercream to create an array of stars on your cake.
- You can draw the characters onto the cake with a toothpick OR create a stencil by drawing one on a piece of paper then cutting it out. You can even print one out if you’re not a fan of drawing.
- Mix a smaller batch of buttercream up and divide into 5 or so batches. Most will be for the character’s bodysuits one light gray batch will be for the visors.
- Transfer buttercream to piping bags and snip the tips off. Try to keep them pretty small so you can pipe the frosting neatly.
- Pipe the outline for each person then fill in and smooth with a small spatula or knife. Pipe the visor with gray buttercream and repeat for the remaining figures. Chill the cake and smooth any areas that look a bit rough.
- I used my stencil to cut one sugar cookie for the cake topper, which I decorated with buttercream. You can pipe a figure with candy melts which can be covered in buttercream or just pipe more figures on top of the cake.
- Serve or store for later.
Notes
- Create Among Us characters by outlining on the cake with a toothpick or using a stencil drawn or printed and cut out for guidance when piping.
- The vanilla cake's light color contrasts well with the black buttercream; other cake flavors like red velvet or chocolate can be substituted for variety.
- Use the best buttercream recipe with room temperature butter, ensuring enough buttercream for filling and decoration.
- Chilling the cake slightly before smoothing buttercream on characters helps achieve cleaner detail.
- Small piping bags with narrow tips provide better control for precise piping work on decorations.
- If white confetti sprinkles are unavailable, silver balls or other sprinkles can be used; alternatively, pipe small white buttercream dots.
- Use sugar cookies made with the stencil for cake toppers, or commercially bought toppers, to customize the theme further.
