Apple Cobbler

Apple Cobbler highlights sliced firm Golden Delicious apples tossed with lemon juice and a cinnamon-spiced brown sugar sauce. The topping combines flour, sugar, baking powder, and cold butter cut into a crumbly dough, with buttermilk and vanilla folded in for moisture and flavor. The cobbler bakes into a tender, golden crust that complements the soft, fruity filling. This homestyle dessert suits autumn or anytime fresh apples are available.

Description

This Apple Cobbler features a filling of crisp apple slices tossed in lemon juice for brightness, then coated in a cooked sauce made from brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and apple juice simmered with butter. This sauce thickens and sweetens the apples while baking. The topping is crafted by cutting cold butter into a dry flour mixture with baking powder and soda, creating a coarse meal. Buttermilk and vanilla are folded in to form a soft batter that bakes to a biscuit-like crust with a subtle cinnamon sugar sprinkling.

Once assembled, the cobbler is baked in a 13-by-9 inch dish until the topping is golden and the filling bubbles. The contrast between the tender, juicy apples and the crumbly, flavorful crust defines the dish. It serves well warm, making it appealing as a dessert after meals, especially in fall.
