Apple Crisp

Apple Crisp combines tender, cinnamon-spiced apples baked beneath a crisp pecan crumble topping, creating a balance of soft fruit and crunchy texture. The lemon juice brightens the apple filling, preventing browning and adding slight tartness. This dessert satisfies with its cozy warmth and nutty crunch, especially when paired with vanilla ice cream. It's a classic autumn treat using common baking ingredients and straightforward assembling and baking steps, suited for small batches in an 8x8 or 9x9 pan or individual ramekins.

Description

The Apple Crisp recipe features a filling of peeled and chopped apples tossed with fresh lemon juice and sugar, gently sweetened and slightly tart. The topping is a brown sugar pecan crumble made by pulsing sugars, flour, spices, and cold butter with chopped nuts to form coarse crumbs. Once assembled, the crisp bakes until the apples are tender and bubbling, and the topping turns golden and crunchy. The contrast between the soft, warm apples and the nutty, crumbly topping creates a comforting dessert. The recipe notes suggest using a mix of apple varieties like Granny Smith, McIntosh, and Honeycrisp for depth of flavor. It serves well warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream to complement the cinnamon and pecan notes. This is a straightforward, reliable method for a classic dessert that highlights simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Servings

Brown Sugar Pecan Crumble:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter cut into cubes, cold
  • 3/4 cup pecans chopped, or walnuts or almonds

Apple Filling:

  • 6 medium apple peeled, cored, and chopped into 1-inch pieces, about 6 cups total
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons lemon juice fresh
  • 1/4 cup sugar

Instructions

Topping:

  1. Place the brown sugar, sugar, flour, salt, and cinnamon in a food processor or high powered blender (such as a Vitamix). Pulse. Add cold butter and pulse until coarse crumbs form. Add pecans and pulse. Place in the refrigerator to chill while you prepare the apples.

Apple Filling:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Peel, quarter, core, and cut the apples into 1-inch bite-size pieces. Place in a bowl and toss the apples with lemon juice and sugar. Pour the apples into an 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 baking pan or 6-8 individual ramekins. Lightly spray baking pans or ramekins with non-stick cooking spray. Sprinkle topping all over the apples.
  2. Bake for 35-44 minutes or until apples are tender, the filling is bubbling, and the topping is golden. Let set for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set-up. Serve with vanilla bean ice cream.

Notes

  • Double the recipe to make a larger batch suitable for a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  • Using a mix of apple varieties such as Granny Smith, McIntosh, and Honeycrisp enhances flavor and texture.
