Apple Crisp
Description
The Apple Crisp recipe focuses on thinly peeled slices of Granny Smith apples, known for their tartness and firmness, ensuring the fruit softens nicely when baked but holds shape. The cinnamon and brown sugar add warmth and natural sweetness, while cornstarch thickens the apples' juices during cooking. The crumbly topping combines oats and flour with melted butter, brown sugar, and baking powder, resulting in a golden, crunchy crust that contrasts the tender fruit beneath.
Baking at 350 degrees Fahrenheit allows the apples to become tender and the topping to crisp evenly in about 40 to 45 minutes. The crisp is best slightly cooled and served warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which melts into the hot fruit and topping for a creamy balance.
This dessert pairs well with casual dinners and seasonal meals where autumn flavors are appreciated. Its preparation is straightforward but benefits from peeling and slicing apples thinly to ensure tenderness throughout.
Best enjoyed fresh, Apple Crisp can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for a few days, though the topping will soften with time. It can also be frozen after baking; thaw overnight and reheat in the oven to restore warmth and texture.
Ingredients
- 8 cups apple peeled and thinly sliced, Granny Smith variety
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- 1 Tablepsoon corn starch
Topping
- 1 cup butter melted
- 1 cup brown sugar packed
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9x13 inch pan and set aside.
- Prepare the topping by mixing the melted butter, brown sugar, flour, oatmeal and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Place in refrigerator while you prepare the filling.
- Peel and thinly slice the apples. Place apples in a large mixing bowl with cinnamon, brown sugar and cornstarch. Toss to combine.
- Dump the apple mixture into prepared baking dish and spread into even layer. Remove the topping from the refrigerator and evenly drop by spoonful on top of the apple mixture in baking dish.
- Place apple crisp in preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 40-45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown, the apples are tender and juices are bubbling around the edges.
- Allow to cool slightly and serve warm with vanilla ice cream if desired.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for their tartness and firm texture, ideal for baking.
- Peeling the apples helps achieve a softer texture in the cooked filling.
- Slice apples thinly so they bake through evenly and become tender.
- Enjoy fresh for the best texture; leftovers keep a few days at room temperature in an airtight container but topping softens.
- Apple Crisp can be frozen after baking; thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven before serving.
