Apple Crisp
Description
The Apple Crisp recipe starts with a filling of tart apples tossed in granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and water, which softens during baking and forms a syrupy base. The topping combines flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, walnuts, cinnamon, and salt mixed with melted butter until crumbly. Spreading this evenly over the apple layer creates a contrast of textures after baking at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 to 40 minutes. The topping crisps to a deep golden brown while the apples beneath become tender and juicy, evidenced by bubbling at the edges.
This dessert pairs well with ice cream or whipped cream and serves as a satisfying conclusion to a meal. Using tart apples like Granny Smith or similar varieties ensures a balance between sweet and tangy flavors. Cutting apples uniformly helps them cook evenly.
The topping’s rolled oats provide chew, while chopped walnuts contribute crunch and a rich flavor. The dish should be allowed to cool briefly before serving to set the juices.
Ingredients
For the filling
- 10 cups apple peeled, cored and cut into 3/4 inch pieces
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons water
For the topping
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup brown sugar packed
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup walnut finely chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 10 tablespoons butter melted, unsalted
- cooking spray
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Coat a 9" x 13" baking pan with cooking spray.
- For the filling: Place the apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice and water in a large bowl. Toss to coat.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pan in an even layer.
- For the topping: Put the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, walnuts and salt into a medium bowl, stir to combine. Pour in the melted butter. Using a fork, stir the ingredients until they are thoroughly combined.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes until topping is deep golden brown and fruit is bubbling. Cool for at least 10 minutes, then serve.
Notes
- Use tart and firm apples such as Granny Smith, Pink Lady, Braeburn, or Cameo for best flavor and texture.
- Cut apples into similar sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
- For topping, old fashioned rolled oats provide better texture than quick oats.
