Apples such as Gala or Braeburn are peeled, diced, and tossed in a mixture of white sugar, flour, and cinnamon to coat them evenly. They are spread in a single layer over the crust to form the base.

The topping blends flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, cinnamon, and softened butter combined until reaching a texture akin to wet sand. Sprinkled evenly atop the apples, this topping crisps during baking, providing a contrasting texture to the soft apples and tender crust.

  • 4 cups apple like Gala, Fiji, Braeburn, Empire diced into 1/4 inch pieces - around 4 apples, peeled and diced

TOPPING:

  • 1/2 /2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 /3 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 /2 cup rolled oats old-fashioned
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 /4 cup butter softened (see Note, salted

DRIZZLE:

  • 1/2 /2 cup caramel topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Roll pie crust to fit a 12 inch pizza pan; fold under edges to give the pizza a bit of a raised crust. Combine sugar, flour and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Add peeled, diced apples and toss. Arrange the apples in a single layer over the pie crust to completely cover it.
  3. For the topping: Combine the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and butter in a bowl. Mix well. I like to use my clean hands to get in there and mush it together until it's the texture of wet sand. Sprinkle topping evenly over the apples.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until apples are tender. Remove from oven and immediately drizzle with caramel topping. Cut into pizza slices and serve warm with ice cream. Makes 12 servings.

Notes

  • Using salted butter in the topping balances the sweetness; if using unsalted butter, sprinkle salt on top before baking.
