Apple Crisp Recipe
Description
This Apple Crisp recipe mixes peeled, cored, and sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, flour, and warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The mixture is spread in a greased dish and dotted with butter. A topping composed of oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and cold butter is crumbled over the apples. Baking at 350°F until golden with bubbling juices melds the flavors and textures.
The apples become tender and juicy while the topping creates a crisp-chewy contrast with oat clusters. The dessert is served warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream, highlighting the classic balance of sweet and tart fruit with a buttery, spiced topping.
For extra brightness, adding lemon or orange zest to the apple mixture enhances citrus notes. Preparing the topping with cold butter ensures the topping retains a chunky, crunchy texture. Making the topping ahead and refrigerating is practical. Adjusting spices like cardamom or cloves personalizes the flavor. Even distribution of apple pieces helps even baking.
