Apple Crisp Stuffed Baked Apples

Apple Crisp Stuffed Baked Apples combine whole baked apples hollowed out and filled with sautéed apple chunks sweetened with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon, all topped with a crumbly oat and flour topping. The crumble bakes to a crispy texture, contrasting with the tender baked apples beneath, creating a layered dessert that showcases the warmth of cinnamon and the natural sweetness of Fuji apples. This recipe works well as a comforting treat served warm, optionally with ice cream or caramel sauce for added richness.

Description

The Apple Crisp Stuffed Baked Apples recipe uses whole Fuji apples as natural vessels for a cooked apple filling. The filling is made by sautéing peeled and chopped apples with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until tender. Topped with a butter-cut crumble consisting of flour, oats, sugars, cinnamon, and salt, these apples bake at 400 degrees until the topping crisps. The contrast between the soft filling and crunchy topping highlights the dish's textures. Baking the apples at a high temperature also helps maintain their shape.

Flavored mainly by cinnamon and rich butter, the dessert delivers a warm spiced sweetness without being heavy. The crumble topping adds a lightly crunchy layer that complements the soft interior. Serving suggestions include topping with vanilla ice cream or drizzling caramel sauce, which bring creamy and buttery notes that pair well with the fruitiness.

The recipe notes suggest using an apple corer to remove the core and mix some of that flesh into the filling, reducing the needed number of apples. The flesh scooped from the hollowed apples can be discarded or saved for other uses. This recipe yields eight stuffed apples with a deliciously textured cinnamon crumble topping baked to a crisp.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 apple I used fuji apples
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Crumble Topping

  • ½ cup flour
  • ¼ cup oats
  • cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons butter chilled and cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. First, prepare the crumble topping. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, oats, brown sugar, sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter with a pastry knife, or two forks, or with your hands until mixture is crumbly. Set aside.
  2. Peel and chop 4 of the apples. Add chopped apples, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to a medium sauce pan and sauté over medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until apples are tender. Remove from heat.
  3. Chop the tops off of the remaining 4 apples and use a spoon to scoop out the flesh. Discard the flesh or save it for another recipe.(See Note) You don't need to get every little bit out, just enough to make a "bowl" for the filling.
  4. Fill scooped-out apples with apple filling from the sauce pan. Top with a generous amount of crumble topping.
  5. Place stuffed apples on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until crumble topping is crispy. Serve warm and top with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use an apple corer to remove cores and reserve some flesh for the filling to reduce the number of apples needed.
  • The scooped-out apple flesh can be discarded or saved for another recipe.
