Apple Crisp with Oats

Apple Crisp with Oats features a thick oat and brown sugar crumb topping baked over a sweetened, cooked apple filling made from a mix of Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples. The apples are gently thickened with a cornstarch slurry and flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. The crisp topping becomes golden and crunchy after baking, contrasting with the tender cooked fruit beneath, making it a comforting fall dessert.

Description

This recipe prepares an apple filling by cooking peeled and chopped Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples in a mixture of water, sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon juice until the fruit is tender. Cornstarch slurry is added while cooking to thicken the filling. Separately, a crumb topping made from flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, cold butter, and cinnamon is combined until crumbly.

The cooked apple mixture is poured into a baking dish and topped evenly with the oat crumb mixture. Baking at 350°F for about an hour results in a golden brown, crunchy topping and a thickened apple filling underneath. The use of two apple varieties balances tartness and sweetness.

Serve the apple crisp warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream, which adds creamy contrast to the textured topping and spiced apples. The recipe makes a generous portion suitable for family gatherings or seasonal meals.
