Apple Crisp with Oats
Description
This recipe prepares an apple filling by cooking peeled and chopped Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples in a mixture of water, sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon juice until the fruit is tender. Cornstarch slurry is added while cooking to thicken the filling. Separately, a crumb topping made from flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, cold butter, and cinnamon is combined until crumbly.
The cooked apple mixture is poured into a baking dish and topped evenly with the oat crumb mixture. Baking at 350°F for about an hour results in a golden brown, crunchy topping and a thickened apple filling underneath. The use of two apple varieties balances tartness and sweetness.
Serve the apple crisp warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream, which adds creamy contrast to the textured topping and spiced apples. The recipe makes a generous portion suitable for family gatherings or seasonal meals.
