Apple Crumb Pie
Description
This Apple Crumb Pie features firm apples tossed with sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt, placed into a pie crust. The filling benefits from choosing tart apples like Granny Smith for flavor contrast with the sweet crumb topping. The topping is a mixture of brown sugar, flour, quick oats, and butter, combined thoroughly to create a crunchy, textured layer.
Baked initially uncovered then covered with foil partway through baking, this method allows the crumb topping to brown without overcooking the apples. The apples become tender and hold their shape due to the flour in the filling. The final drizzle of caramel ice cream sauce adds a creamy sweetness that complements the tartness of the apples and the buttery topping.
Serve the pie cooled, optionally with ice cream, making it a dessert suitable for family meals or gatherings. Its texture contrast between crumbly top and soft fruit filling is a central appeal.
For best results, select firm apples that maintain structure when baked. Quick oats in the topping cook faster than regular oats, ensuring crispness. Slice apples thinly for even cooking, and measure carefully as the volume depends on apple size.
Ingredients
- 1 pie pastry
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 3 Tbsp flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 5 1/2 c. apples peeled, thinly sliced
Crumb Topping
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1/2 c. flour
- 1/2 c. quick oats
- 1/2 c. butter
- 1/3 c. caramel ice cream sauce
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- Place pastry in a 9" deep dish pie pan.
- In a large bowl, combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Toss the apples in this mixture and pour into the pie crust.
- Throughly combine the crumb topping ingredients. Sprinkle the topping over the apple mixture.
- Bake the pie for 20-30 minutes. Then cover with foil and bake another 20 minutes until the apples are tender. Remove pie from oven and drizzle with 1/3 c. butterscotch caramel ice cream sauce. Cool and serve with ice cream.
Notes
- Choosing firm tart apples such as Granny Smith helps balance the sweet crumb topping.
- Thinly slice apples for even cooking and aim for about 1 1/3 to 2 1/2 cups sliced per apple depending on size.
- Use quick oats in the crumb topping to ensure they cook thoroughly and add crisp texture.
