Apple Crumble
Description
Apple Crumble uses peeled and cubed Granny Smith apples tossed with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice to create a slightly thickened, flavorful filling. The topping blends oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, melted butter, and a pinch of salt until crumbly and sandy, which crisps up nicely in the oven. When baked at 180°C (350°F) for 30 to 40 minutes, the topping turns golden brown while the apples soften and release their juices, producing a pleasantly textured dessert.
The final dish is served warm, typically alongside vanilla ice cream for a contrasting cool creaminess. The crumble’s sweet and tart elements balance well together, making it suitable as a cozy seasonal dessert.
To prepare ahead, assemble the apple filling and refrigerate before adding the topping and baking. Adjust sugar levels in the topping if a less sweet taste is desired, but keep sugar in the filling to maintain the syrupy texture. The recipe’s weight measures provide reliable results regardless of regional cup size variations.
Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 2 lb / 1kg granny smith apples weight before peeling, green apples
- 1 tbsp flour , plain / all-purpose
- 1/2 cup white sugar (sub brown sugar)
- 2 tbsp lemon juice (or water)
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Topping
- 1 cup rolled oats quick cooking is ok, or oatmeal
- 1 cup flour , plain / all-purpose
- 1 cup (loosely packed) brown sugar (sub white sugar)
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- 125g / 1/2 cup butter melted, unsalted
- salt pinch
To Serve
- vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180°C / 350°F (both fan and standard).
- Apple - Peel apples, then cut into 1.5cm/ 1/2” cubes.
- Apple filling - Place apples in a bowl. Sprinkle with flour, sugar and cinnamon, then pour over lemon juice. Toss, then spread out evenly in a 1.5 litre/1.5 quart baking dish.
- Crumble topping - Place Topping ingredients in a bowl. Mix until clumps form, like wet sand (see video). Spread over the apples, crumbling with fingers if required to get that crumbly topping.
- Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown. Remove, cover loosely with foil to keep warm and let stand for 10 minutes before serving (let's the apple syrup thicken slightly).
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream!
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for tartness; other apples or pears can be used but adjust sugar accordingly.
- Do not omit sugar in the filling to ensure a syrupy consistency.
- Mix the topping ingredients until clumps form for a nice crumbly texture.
- Make ahead by preparing up to the topping and refrigerating until ready to bake.
- Reduce topping sugar to 1/2 cup if you prefer a less sweet dessert.
- The recipe is forgiving with cup measurements but rely on weight measures for best results.
