Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble is made by simmering spiced apple pieces into a tender filling topped with a crunchy mixture of almond flour, oats, walnuts, and coconut oil. The topping browns to a crisp finish in the oven, contrasting the soft and warmly spiced apples below. This baked dessert offers a pleasing combination of textures and seasonal flavors.

Description

This Apple Crumble combines peeled, chopped apples simmered gently with apple cider vinegar, water, and a blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt to create a fragrant and tender fruit filling. The simmering softens the apples and thickens the juices slightly before baking.

The topping is a crumbly mix of almond flour, all-purpose flour, rolled oats, crushed walnuts, and brown sugar bound together with coconut oil and seasoned with cinnamon and sea salt. When baked, it crisps up to a golden brown, providing a nutty, sweet contrast to the soft apples beneath.

The assembled dish is baked in an 8x8-inch pan until the topping is lightly crisp and the filling bubbly. The dessert offers warm, spiced apple flavor with a crunchy nutty topping, suitable for enjoying on its own or with cream or ice cream.

Ingredients

Servings

Spiced apple filling

  • 5 apple peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of sea salt

Topping

  • ½ cup almond flour
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • cup rolled oats whole
  • cup walnuts crushed
  • cup brown sugar or coconut sugar
  • cup coconut oil melted
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • sea salt heaping ¼ teaspoon
  • 1 teaspoon water if needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  2. Make the filling: Combine the apples, apple cider vinegar, and water in a saucepan and simmer over very low heat, covered, stirring occasionally (making sure the apples don’t burn on the bottom of the pan) for 15 minutes. Uncover, stir, and add the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt and stir again. The apples should be tender, and the juices should be thick.
  3. Make the topping: In a food processor, place the flours, oats, walnuts, sugar, coconut oil, cinnamon, and salt and pulse until crumbly. Add the water if needed.
  4. Scoop the apple filling into the baking dish and sprinkle with the topping. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes or until lightly crisp on top.
