Apple Crumble Flatbread

Apple Crumble Flatbread features tender, caramelized sliced apples cooked with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon laid atop a thin flatbread base. A topping of crumbly mixture made from brown sugar, flour, oats, butter, and cinnamon adds a crisp contrast after baking. Served warm, it is ideal with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce, offering a comforting dessert with a balance of soft fruit and crunchy topping textures.

Description

The recipe starts by cooking thin slices of apple with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until they soften and the mixture caramelizes, creating a rich, sweet filling. This apple mixture is spread over a flatbread crust, which can be rectangular or round, providing a thin, slightly crispy base.

A crumble topping combining brown sugar, flour, rolled oats, cinnamon, and cold butter is sprinkled over the apples. Baking the assembled flatbread allows the topping to crisp up while the apple mixture bubbles through, resulting in a pleasing texture contrast between the soft, tender apples and the crunchy topping.

Once baked, serving the flatbread warm with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce adds creaminess and extra sweetness, making it a satisfying dessert. The recipe uses fuji apples but suggests alternatives like gala for similar results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 medium red apples (I used fuji, you could also use gala or something similar)
  • 2 inch flatbread you could sub a larger, rectangular flatbread, round
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • vanilla ice cream
  • caramel sauce

Topping

  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup flour
  • ¼ cup rolled oats (optional, but highly recommended!)
  • 2 tablespoons butter cold
  • 2 ½ teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment and lightly grease.
  2. Core, seed, and thinly slice your apples. (I didn't peel mine but feel free to peel them first if you want). Add apples, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to a medium sauce pan and cook over medium heat for 5-8 minutes until apples are very tender and sauce is caramelized. Remove from heat.
  3. While the apples are cooking, prepare your crumble. In a small-medium bowl combine brown sugar, flour, oats, and cinnamon. Dice the cold butter and add to mixture. Mash in with a fork, pastry cutter, or your fingers, until a crumbly mixture forms.
  4. Place flatbreads on prepared baking sheet. Top flatbreads with apple-caramel mixture. (It will probably spread and spill off of the flatbreads, don't worry about it, just make sure to get all of the apples on the flatbreads).
  5. Sprinkle crumble over apple mixture. Bake for 5-10 minutes until apple-caramel mixture is bubbly and thick. Serve immediately topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.

Notes

  • Fuji apples were used here, but gala or similar apples work well too.
