Apple Crumble Recipe
Description
This recipe begins by peeling and slicing approximately six apples, which are then mixed with sugar, cinnamon, and a small amount of flour to coat and thicken the filling during baking. These cinnamon-sugar apples create a sweet and spiced base with tender texture once cooked.
The topping combines packed brown sugar, flour, and chopped pecans mixed with melted salted butter, producing a rich, crumbly layer that crispens as the crumble bakes. Covering the dish with foil initially prevents the topping from over-browning, with the foil removed halfway through baking to allow browning and thickening of the fruit juices.
Once baked and rested, the dish is typically served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which adds a cool, creamy contrast to the warm, spiced apples and crunchy topping.
Choosing sweeter and firmer apple varieties like Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp works well, balancing the sweet-spiced crumble and resulting in tender yet structured pieces.
Ingredients
Cinnamon Sugar Apples
- 2 lbs. (about 6) apple
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 Tablespoon flour
Brown Sugar Pecan Crumble Topping:
- 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 3/4 cup pecans (chopped)
- 3/4 cup butter melted, salted
- vanilla ice cream
Instructions
Cinnamon Sugar Apples:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Start by peeling the apples. Slice the apples or cut them into bite-size pieces or chunks. Place in a bowl and toss with sugar, cinnamon, and a touch of flour. Place in a 8 or 9-inch baking dish.
Brown Sugar Pecan Crumble:
- In a bowl, add brown sugar, flour, and pecans and toss. Add in melted butter and mix together until all of the ingredients come together.
- Top the cinnamon sugar apples with the pecan crumble topping.
- Spray a piece of foil with non-stick cooking spray. Place the side down (that has been sprayed with cooking spray) on top of the crumble. This will help to keep the crumble from becoming too brown.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes. Remove the foil halfway through the baking time. Watch for the apples to start to bubble and thicken.
- Remove from the oven and let sit for about 15 minutes to allow it to firm up and cool down.Serve with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Select firm, sweet apples such as Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp for best texture and flavor; tart Granny Smith apples can also be used if you prefer more acidity.
- Peel and slice apples into preferred size slices or chunks before tossing with cinnamon sugar mixture.
