Apple Danish

This Apple Danish features a flaky crescent roll dough base layered with a creamy mixture of cream cheese, sugar, flour, and vanilla, topped with tender, cinnamon-spiced diced Fuji apples. The apples are softened in butter with cinnamon and sugar, then spread atop the cream cheese layer. The edges of the dough are braided over the filling, creating a decorative and flavorful pastry. The Danish is baked until set and golden, then finished with a creamy vanilla glaze for added sweetness and shine.

Description

The Apple Danish is assembled starting with crescent roll dough, which is unrolled and sealed into a rectangle. A cream cheese filling blended with sugar, flour, and vanilla is spread down the center, creating a rich, slightly tangy base. Diced Fuji apples cooked with butter, cinnamon, and sugar until tender are piled on top, providing a soft, warmly spiced topping. The strips along the sides of the dough are folded over the filling in a braided pattern, enclosing the apple cream cheese mixture partially and creating an attractive lattice effect. The whole Danish is baked at 375°F until the filling is set and dough is golden, approximately 20 minutes. Finally, a glaze made of powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla is drizzled over the baked pastry to add a smooth sweetness and finish. This Danish combines flakey pastry texture with creamy and fruity layers for a balanced dessert or breakfast treat.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large Fuji apple peeled and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tube crescent rolls
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened (1 package)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

for the glaze -

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons heavy cream plus more if needed
  • plash vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375° F.
  2. In a medium nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. Add in apples, cinnamon, and sugar. Stir and cook until tender, 10-15 minutes.
  3. While apples are cooking, in a small bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar, flour, and vanilla. Set aside.
  4. Pop open crescent roll dough and unroll, leaving crescents in rectangles. On an ungreased baking sheet, lay the crescent roll rectangles together, lining them up width wise. The dough should be almost the entire length of a half sheet pan. Press edges together to even out edges and seal any holes. Cut 1/2 inch diagonal strips up each side of the dough. Carefully spread cream cheese filling down the center of the dough to be about 2-3 inches wide. Top with cooked apples.
  5. Fold 1/2 inch dough pieces up over filling alternating sides to get a braided pattern. You may have excess dough once you reach the end of the danish, so fold them in as best as you can.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes or until filling is set and the crescent dough is golden in color. Cool at least 20 minutes before removing from baking sheet.
  7. Once danish has cooled, remove to a serving platter. In a small bowl, mix together powdered sugar, vanilla, and cream to create icing. You may need to add more cream to get the desired consistency. Drizzle icing over danish.
  8. Cut into pieces and serve.
