Apple Dumplings
Description
Apple Dumplings are made by wrapping whole peeled and cored apples in a soft dough composed of flour, baking powder, salt, butter, and milk. The dough is rolled out and shaped around each apple to form individual dumplings. These are arranged in a baking pan and covered with a warm sauce created by gently heating brown sugar, water, butter, and cinnamon until it begins to boil. Baking the dumplings in this sauce allows the apples to soften while the dough bakes to a tender, slightly flaky finish.
The resulting dish combines the tender, juicy warmth of baked apples with a soft dough envelope and a syrupy cinnamon sauce. The sauce's sweetness balances the slight tartness of the apples, and the butter adds richness to the overall flavor profile.
Apple Dumplings can be served as a satisfying dessert on their own or with accompaniments like cream or ice cream. They hold well when baked as directed and can be customized by adjusting dough thickness or apple size to make smaller servings.
Spices like nutmeg or apple pie spice can be added to the sauce for variation. Dough thickness may be altered by increasing the number of dough balls for a thinner layer around the apples. The recipe estimates calorie content per serving based on six dumplings but may vary depending on ingredient brands.
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour 267 grams
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Adding a dash of freshly grated nutmeg or apple pie spice complements the cinnamon in the sauce for additional warmth.
- For smaller dumplings, use half an apple and less dough; alternatively, increase the number of dough balls to make a thinner dough layer.
- This recipe yields six large dumplings; serving size is one dumpling each.
