Apple Dumplings
Description
The recipe involves dividing pie dough into rounds large enough to wrap each whole apple filled with a cinnamon-brown sugar-butter mixture. The dough is sealed over the apples using beaten egg for adhesion, then arranged in a baking dish. Meanwhile, a sauce made of apple juice (or water), butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and apple pie spice is boiled briefly and poured over the dumplings.
Baking at 400°F for about 40-45 minutes softens the apples and crisps the pastry while the sauce thickens and soaks into the dumplings. The result highlights the tartness of Granny Smith apples wrapped in flavorful, sweet pastry covered in a spiced buttery glaze.
Apple Dumplings can be served warm or reheated, with the crust crispness best preserved by reheating in the oven rather than the microwave. Raisins or nuts can be added inside the apples for variation. Leftovers store well refrigerated for several days.
Ingredients
- 6 large apple peeled and cored, Granny Smith variety
- 1 pie crust homemade or store bought, double
- ¼ cup butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 egg beaten
Sauce
- 1 cup apple juice or water
- 3 tablespoons butter
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon apple pie spice or cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a 9x13 dish.
- Divide dough into 6 pieces. Roll each into a 7" circle (or large enough to wrap your apples).
- In a small bowl mix butter, brown sugar, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Fill each apple core.
- Wrap pastry around each apple using a little bit of beaten egg to seal at the top. Pinch the sides to seal and place in the prepared pan.
- Combine juice, sugar, vanilla extract, apple pie spice and butter. Bring to a boil and let simmer 3-4 minutes.
- Pour over dumplings and bake about 40-45 minutes or until apples are soft and pastry is golden.
Notes
- Avoid overbaking to prevent the dumplings from bursting.
- Optional additions like raisins or chopped nuts can be placed inside the apple centers.
- Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 4-5 days, reheating in a foil-covered pan in the oven for 10-15 minutes preserves crust texture better than microwaving.
