Apple Fries

Apple Fries are crispy fried apple slices coated in a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture. The apples, preferably tart varieties like Granny Smith or Pink Lady, are soaked in a buttermilk and sugar bath to prevent browning and add moisture. They are then dredged in a fine flour before frying until golden and crisp. Served hot with a creamy caramel-cream cheese dip, these provide a sweet, textured dessert or snack with a blend of tartness, cinnamon spice, and creamy richness from the dip.

Description

This recipe prepares Apple Fries by slicing tart apples, soaking them in a buttermilk and sugar mixture to keep them firm and prevent browning. They are then lightly coated with Wondra flour, a finely milled flour ideal for frying, and deep-fried until golden brown on both sides. While hot, they are sprinkled with a cinnamon and sugar blend to add sweetness and spice. The texture is crisp on the outside while still maintaining some tenderness within the apple slices.

The accompanying dip mixes cream cheese, whipped topping or whipped cream, and caramel sauce, offering a creamy, sweet contrast to the fried apple pieces. This combination enhances the flavors and adds a smooth richness against the crisp cinnamon-coated apples.

The recipe notes suggest variations including substituting Wondra flour with cornstarch or regular flour, adjusting apple slice size to preference, and adding additional spices such as apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice to tailor the flavor profile.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Apples:

  • 4 to 5 apple Granny Smith or Pink Lady, tart
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup wondra flour brand name
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/8 cup cinnamon

For the Dip:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 8 ounces Cool Whip or 1 cup whipping cream with 1/2 cup sugar- whipped until stiff
  • 1 cup caramel sauce store bought or homemade (see above)

Instructions

  1. In a fry pan, or deep fryer heat vegetable oil for frying. Mix together the buttermilk and sugar in a medium size bowl. Peel and slice apples and add them to the buttermilk mixture as you go to prevent browning.
  2. Spread wondra flour evenly in a shallow dish. Pull the apples out of the buttermilk mix, one at a time and lightly coat all sides in the flour.
  3. When oil is nice and hot, gently place coated apples into the oil so they are not touching, when the bottom side begins to turn golden brown, flip them over and brown the second side.
  4. Quickly remove to a tray lined with paper towels to soak up excess grease and cool. Sprinkle immediately with cinnamon and sugar while they are hot.

For the dip:

  1. Mix together the the cream cheese and cool whip until completely blended then stir in the caramel sauce. Place into a bowl for dipping and drizzle a little extra caramel sauce over the top.

Notes

  • You can substitute Wondra flour with cornstarch or all-purpose flour for coating the apples before frying; these options will still create a suitable crisp exterior.
  • Cut apples into long slices for fries or small bite-sized squares, depending on your preference for serving size.
  • Choose tart apples like Granny Smith or Pink Lady to balance the sweetness from the sugar and cinnamon coating.
  • Enhance the flavor by adding spices such as apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, or ginger and nutmeg to the cinnamon sugar mix.
