Apple Hand Pies

Apple Hand Pies use small circles of pie crust filled with cinnamon-spiced apple pie filling, folded and crimped to seal. Baking at a high temperature creates golden, tender-crisp edges with a soft, fruity interior. This portable treat allows enjoying classic apple pie flavors in a convenient, individual serving, ideal for snacks or dessert on the go.

Description

Apple Hand Pies are made by cutting rolled pie dough into circles, filling each with a spiced apple mixture, and folding them into half-moon shapes sealed by crimping. The cinnamon in the filling adds warm spice that complements the sweetness of the apples. Baking them at 425°F quickly crisps the dough edges while allowing the filling to cook through and become tender.

The texture combines a flaky, golden crust with juicy apple centers, accented by the aromatic cinnamon. The top is pierced with slits to release steam and maintain a crisp exterior. These hand pies can be served warm or room temperature and are convenient for individual servings or packed lunches.

The recipe also provides instructions for homemade apple pie filling using cooked apples thickened with cornstarch and flavored with cinnamon, which can be cooled beforehand. For convenience, store-bought pie filling can be used. An egg wash applied before and after sealing ensures a shiny, golden crust.

Additionally, these pies can be baked in an air fryer as an alternative method, allowing for flexible cooking options depending on available equipment.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 21 ounces apple pie filling store bought or homemade below
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 package pie crust store bought or homemade, double
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Chop apple pie filling into small pieces and mix with cinnamon. Beat the egg with milk until combined.
  3. Roll out the pie dough to ⅛" thick and using a 4-inch circle cutter, cut out 10 circles.
  4. Add 1 ½ tablespoons of the apple pie filling to each circle.
  5. Brush egg wash around the edges and fold over the dough making a half circle. Use a fork to crimp the edges firmly together. Make two slits on the top of the pie.
  6. Brush with the remaining egg wash and bake for 12 minutes.

Notes

  • If using cinnamon-spiced pie filling, adjust additional cinnamon to taste or omit it.
  • Hand pies can be baked in an air fryer at 350°F for 8-10 minutes for a crisp crust.
  • To make homemade filling, cook peeled and chopped apples with sugar, water, butter, and cinnamon until tender, then thicken with cornstarch mixture and cool before filling.
