Apple Oatmeal Bars

Apple Oatmeal Bars feature a crumbly oat and flour crust with tender apple slices sweetened and baked into the center. The oat topping added over apples creates a golden, slightly crunchy surface with a buttery richness. These bars offer a blend of soft fruit and a hearty textured crust, good as a dessert or snack with a homey feel.

Description

These bars start with a mixture of all-purpose flour, salt, baking soda, brown sugar, and rolled oats. Cold, cubed butter is cut in with a pastry cutter until the combination resembles coarse crumbs, forming a crisp crust when baked. Half of this oat topping is pressed into the bottom of a prepared baking pan to create the base layer.

Thinly sliced peeled apples are arranged over the crust, then sprinkled with granulated sugar and drizzled with melted butter, adding sweetness and moisture. The remaining oat mixture is pressed on top to cover the apples in an even layer. Baking at 350°F until golden brown finishes the bars with a crisp crust and tender fruit filling.

The bars combine the texture of oats and crumbly topping with the sweetness and slight tartness of apples. Using tart apples like Granny Smith helps balance the sweetness, but sweeter varieties can also work. These bars are suitable for serving as a simple dessert or snack and keep well when refrigerated in an airtight container.

The notes suggest options to make this recipe gluten-free with appropriate flour and oats, or vegan by using dairy-free butter. The recipe yields about 10 bars. Calorie estimates depend on ingredient brands and should be calculated specifically if needed.

  • For gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour and oats with certified gluten-free versions.
  • Swap regular butter for dairy-free alternatives to make this a vegan-friendly dessert.
