Apple Pie Ice Cream

Apple Pie Ice Cream combines tender cinnamon-spiced apples cooked in butter and sugar with a creamy base of milk, cream, cinnamon, and vanilla. The cooked apples are mixed into soft-serve consistency ice cream along with broken cinnamon graham crackers, adding a textural contrast reminiscent of pie crust. The final product is a firm, flavorful frozen treat with familiar warm spices and apple pieces that echo traditional apple pie flavors.

Description

In this recipe, diced Granny Smith apples are cooked with butter, sugar, and cinnamon until softened, then chilled thoroughly. This apple mixture is folded into a spiced ice cream base made from milk, heavy cream, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Using an ice cream maker, the base is churned for 20-25 minutes until soft-serve texture is reached, then the apples and graham cracker pieces are incorporated. The ice cream is then frozen until firm.

The creamy texture balances the tart and warm-spiced apples, while cinnamon and graham crackers contribute flavors reminiscent of apple pie. The graham crackers add crunch which complements the tender apples and smooth ice cream. This combination captures apple pie elements in a frozen dessert form.

Before serving, the ice cream can sit briefly to soften for easier scooping. Optional caramel sauce layers can be added to intensify the apple pie experience.

As a note, the caramel apple version omits graham crackers and swirls caramel sauce between ice cream layers before final freezing.

Ingredients

Servings

Apples

  • 2 apple peeled and diced small, Granny Smith variety
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons butter salted
  • 3 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Ice Cream Base

  • 2 cups milk whole
  • 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract pure
  • 5 cinnamon graham crackers broken up into pieces

Instructions

  1. In a medium skillet, combine the apples, sugar, butter, and cinnamon over medium-low heat. Cook and stir for about 10 minutes until the apples have softened and released their juices. Cool completely, then chill thoroughly in the fridge.
  2. Whisk the milk, sugar, and cinnamon together in a large bowl for 2 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Stir in the heavy cream and vanilla.
  3. Add the ice cream base mixture to the frozen bowl of an ice cream maker and churn for 20-25 minutes until the ice cream is thick and frozen to about the consistency of soft serve.
  4. Add the apples and graham cracker pieces and churn for a few more minutes (or turn off the machine and stir them in be hand), until evenly incorporated.
  5. Transfer the ice cream to a freezer-safe container and place in the freezer for 4-6 hours until completely firm. Let sit out for 10 minutes before scooping to soften slightly.

Notes

  • To create a caramel apple variation, omit graham crackers and layer caramel sauce between ice cream layers before freezing.
