Apple Streusel Bread
Description
Apple Streusel Bread is prepared by folding peeled and diced apples into a creamed mixture of butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract, combined with flour, baking powder, and milk. Half of the batter is poured into a loaf pan, followed by a sprinkling of cinnamon, brown sugar, and optionally chopped walnuts, before layering the remaining batter on top. The loaf is baked at 350ºF until done.
The streusel sugar topping bakes into a crunchy, sweet crust that contrasts with the tender apple-studded bread interior. The fresh apples provide pockets of moisture and a mild tartness which balances the sweetness from the batter and topping. The added glaze made from powdered sugar and heavy cream is drizzled over after cooling, giving a subtle richness and extra sweetness.
This bread is ideal for breakfast, snack, or dessert. It pairs well with coffee or tea and can be served plain or with a spread of butter. The texture contrasts between moist crumb and crumbly topping provide a pleasant eating experience.
Store the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 48 hours to maintain freshness. If using unsalted butter, adding half a teaspoon of salt adjusts the flavor balance. Cutting into 10 slices gives reasonable portions. Nutritional values are approximate and depend on ingredient brands.
