  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • 2 large egg
  • 1⅓ cup applesauce
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup butter melted
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
  • sugar optional topping, coarse

Instructions

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and spray a 9x5-inch loaf pan with nonstick spray and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat together the eggs, applesauce, sugars, melted butter, and orange zest.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
  5. Transfer the batter to the prepared loaf pan and top with coarse sugar.
  6. Bake for 1 hour or until a toothpick comes clean when inserted into the center of the loaf. Allow to cool in the pan.
  7. Run a paring knife around the edge of the loaf and then flip it over to release the loaf.

Notes

  • Apple pie spice (2½ teaspoons) can replace individual spices for convenience.
  • Orange zest may be omitted or substituted with lemon zest without major flavor change.
  • Cool the bread in the pan before inverting to keep loaf intact.
