Applesauce Bread
Description
This Applesauce Bread blends all-purpose flour with baking powder, baking soda, salt, and a blend of warming spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. The wet ingredients combine eggs, applesauce, granulated and brown sugars, melted butter, and orange zest, imparting citrus brightness to the batter. Mixing wet and dry ingredients forms the bread batter.
The batter is poured into a prepared loaf pan, optionally topped with coarse sugar to add texture to the crust, and baked at 350°F for about an hour until set. The finished bread features a soft, moist interior with a gentle spice profile and mild sweetness from the applesauce and sugars. It suits breakfast, snack, or tea time accompaniments.
Variations include substituting apple pie spice for the individual spices, or omitting or swapping orange zest for lemon zest for a different citrus note. Cooling before removing from the pan prevents crumbling. This recipe offers a flavorful way to use applesauce in baking.
