Asian Five-Spice Chicken
Description
This recipe uses deboned chicken thighs for tender meat with skin left on to crisp during cooking. The marinade combines minced garlic and Asian five-spice powder with sesame oil, Chinese rice wine (or sake), oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and salt. Marinating for at least 15 minutes, preferably an hour, allows the flavors to penetrate the chicken well. The balanced savory, sweet, and aromatic profile comes primarily from the five-spice powder, garlic, and sauces.
The cooking is done by pan-frying the marinated chicken in neutral oil over medium heat until both sides develop a browned, crispy skin and the chicken is fully cooked. This method seals in juices while creating a flavorful crust. The simplicity in cooking highlights the marinated flavors and spice blend.
Asian Five-Spice Chicken can be served immediately once cooked. It pairs well with steamed rice and vegetables, serving as a main protein in an Asian-inspired meal. Alternative cooking methods include grilling or baking at 375°F for about 15-20 minutes until done, which also yield flavorful results.
