Asian Green Beans
Description
Asian Green Beans start by cooking fresh green beans in sesame oil until tender but still crisp and bright green. The sauce combines minced garlic, low sodium and dark soy sauces, honey, sambal oelek chili garlic sauce, and chili oil for heat. After coating the beans with this sauce in the pan, the heat allows the flavors to meld and thicken slightly, delivering a glossy, spicy coating on each bean.
The toasted sesame seeds sprinkled on top add texture and a toasty flavor element that enhances the nutty sesame oil’s aroma. The dish balances spicy and sweet elements without overwhelming the fresh crunch of the green beans.
This preparation works as a vibrant side to many Asian-inspired meals or can be enjoyed as a vegetable snack. It stores well in the refrigerator for several days and reheats quickly with a splash of broth to maintain moisture.
Adjustments to the sauce can include additional aromatics like ginger or red pepper flakes as desired.
Ingredients
- 1 pound green beans cleaned and ends trimmed
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Sauce
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce low sodium
- 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon Chili garlic sauce like sambal oelek
- 1 tablespoon Chili oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds toasted
Instructions
- Sauté the beans. Heat a wok over medium-high heat then add the sesame oil. Add the green beans and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Make the sauce and toss with beans. Combine all the sauce ingredients together then pour over the green beans and toss well. Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Garnish and serve. Garnish with sesame seeds and serve.
Notes
- Avoid overcooking the green beans; they should stay bright green and crisp-tender.
- Parboiling is not necessary before sautéing in sesame oil.
- Customize the sauce by adding ginger or red pepper flakes for varied flavor.
- You can add other vegetables like mushrooms, baby bok choy, or broccoli for variety.
- Store cooled green beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
- Reheat gently in a microwave or skillet with chicken or vegetable broth to prevent drying.
