Award Winning Turkey Chili

Award Winning Turkey Chili blends lean ground turkey with a medley of canned tomatoes, kidney and black beans, diced green chiles, and a balance of chili powder, cumin, and garlic spices. Cooked slowly either in a crockpot or stovetop pot, the chili develops a rich, hearty texture and warming depth of flavor. This recipe is practical for a comforting meal, with options for toppings like shredded cheese, sour cream, and green onions to add freshness and creaminess.

Description

The Award Winning Turkey Chili features lean ground turkey sautéed with onion and garlic as the base, combined with tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, green chiles, and two types of beans. The mixture is seasoned with chili powder, cumin, black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and a touch of brown sugar, creating a well-rounded and slightly sweet spice profile. The chili can be prepared in a slow cooker for several hours, deepening the flavors and softening the components, or quickly simmered on the stovetop for a faster option.

This chili has a thick, stew-like consistency with tender turkey pieces and soft beans, complemented by mild heat from the green chiles. Its versatility makes it suitable for serving as a main dish, accompanied by toppings such as shredded cheese, sour cream, or sliced green onions to add contrasting textures and freshness.

Tips include adjusting the chili powder to taste starting from one tablespoon, substituting ground turkey with ground chicken or beef, and swapping canned beans as preferred. The recipe notes also provide guidance for freezing leftovers: cool to room temperature, freeze in an airtight container for up to 3-4 months, and reheat gently to maintain texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound ground turkey lean
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion diced
  • 1 (15 ounce can) tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce can) diced tomato
  • 1 (7 ounce can) diced green chiles
  • 1 (15 ounce can) Kidney Beans drained, rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce can) black beans drained, rinsed
  • 1-2 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp brown sugar

Toppings

  • sour cream
  • cheese shredded
  • green onion sliced

Instructions

Slow Cooker

  1. Add the lean ground turkey, and onion to a medium size skillet. Cook over medium heat until the onion is soft and the turkey is completely cooked. Add the garlic and cook an additional 30 seconds.
  2. Remove from heat and add to the crockpot.
  3. Add in all the other ingredients, stir to combine. Cook over low heat for 4-6 hours.

Stovetop

  1. Add the meat to a large pot or dutch oven. As the turkey is cooking, add the chopped onion to cook and soften.
  2. Once the meat is cooked and the onion is softened, drain any excess moisture. Add the garlic and allow it to cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  3. Add all the other ingredients. Bring the chili to a simmer and allow to cook for about 10-15 minutes. Serve and top with all your favorite toppings!

Notes

  • Start with 1 tablespoon of chili powder and adjust for desired heat level.
  • You can use ground chicken or beef instead of ground turkey if preferred.
  • Green chiles add mild flavor; replace with jalapeno for more heat.
  • Canned kidney and black beans work well, but feel free to substitute other beans.
  • For freezing, cool chili to room temperature, use a freezer-safe container, freeze up to 3-4 months.
  • To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator and warm over medium heat for 20 minutes until hot.
  • Store leftover chili in a sealed container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.
