Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish and set side. Cook the pasta according to package instructions if it isn't already cooked.
- In a large skillet, cook the lean beef and chopped onion over medium-high heat until the beef is no longer pink and the onion is softened, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat. 1 pound lean ground beef, 1 small yellow onion,
- Sprinkle the flour over the ground beef mixture, stirring well to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes over medium heat, until the flour is well-distributed and slightly browned. 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- Gradually stir in the beef broth, milk, bacon pieces, ketchup, yellow mustard, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce has thickened and is smooth. 1 1/2 cups beef broth, 1 1/2 cups 2% milk, 4 slices crispy bacon, 1/4 cup ketchup, 1 Tablespoon yellow mustard, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked elbow macaroni, half of the shredded cheddar cheese, and the beef and sauce mixture. Stir well to combine. 12 ounces elbow macaroni, 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Pour the macaroni and beef mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
- Bake the casserole in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until heated through and the cheese is melted, bubbly and lightly golden brown.
Notes
- Use ground turkey or ground chicken if you'd like. I recommend adding a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce if you choose one of these meats to help deepen the flavor.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. For longer storage, you can place the casserole in the freezer in an airtight container for up to 2 months.
