Baked Apple Slices

Baked Apple Slices use a mix of firm-fleshed apples coated in melted butter, brown and granulated sugars, lemon juice, a cinnamon-spiced blend, and cornstarch before baking until tender yet retaining some bite. The result is a warm, flavorful side or dessert with a thickened syrupy sauce that clings to the tender fruit. This dish accommodates several spice variations and pairs well with nuts or creamy toppings.

Description

The recipe starts by slicing firm apples such as Granny Smith, Honey Crisp, or Gala into evenly sized pieces to ensure uniform cooking. These slices are tossed in a combination of melted salted butter, brown and white sugars, fresh lemon juice, and a blend of ground cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Cornstarch is added to thicken the juices released during baking, creating a pleasant sauce consistency.

Apples are placed in a greased baking dish or cast iron skillet and baked uncovered at 350°F for about 25 minutes, or until the apples become fork-tender but still retain some firmness to avoid mushiness. Stirring after baking helps coat the slices evenly in their spiced syrup.

This dish serves well on its own as a warm fruit dessert or side and is complemented by garnishes such as toasted walnuts, pecans, or almonds for added texture. It can be served alongside vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for extra richness.

The recipe is flexible with shredding the spices to taste, and cornstarch can be omitted for a thinner sauce. Different baking pans will alter cooking times slightly. Peeling the apples is optional depending on preference.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 cups apple about 4 extra large apples or 6 medium apples, sliced
  • ¼ cup butter melted, salted, half stick
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon freshly squeezed juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon cloves ground
  • teaspoon ground ginger
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a deep 8-inch or 9-inch square or round baking dish, or a 10-inch cast iron skillet. Set aside. Place the apple slices in a large bowl.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and salt.
  3. Pour the butter mixture over the apples; toss to coat.
  4. Transfer the apples and any extra sauce from the bottom of the bowl to the prepared dish.
  5. Bake, uncovered, for about 25 minutes, or until the apples are fork-tender but not mushy. Give them a good stir to coat in the sauce, then serve warm.

Notes

  • Use firm apple varieties like Granny Smith, Honey Crisp, or Gala to prevent the apples from turning to mush during baking.
  • Peeling apples before slicing is optional; the skin adds texture but can be removed based on preference.
  • Slice apples to similar thickness for even cooking.
  • Check for fork-tenderness to avoid overcooking; apples should retain slight bite.
  • Garnish baked apples with toasted nuts like walnuts or pecans for added crunch.
  • Serve warm apples with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for dessert.
  • Adjust the ground spices to your preference, using just cinnamon or combinations like cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • If you omit cornstarch, the sauce will be thinner, resembling apple juice.
  • To prepare a smaller batch, halve the ingredients and use a smaller baking dish; baking time remains similar.
  • If a cast iron skillet is unavailable, use a deep baking dish such as a 9-inch square pan or an 11x7 inch dish.
