Baked Apple Slices

Baked Apple Slices are tender, spiced apple pieces caramelized in a butter and dark brown sugar mixture with cinnamon and ginger. The apples remain soft while holding their shape, making them ideal for a comforting dessert or a warm fruit side. The spice blend adds warmth without overwhelming the natural apple sweetness. This dish is a straightforward way to highlight apple flavors in a baked form that pairs well with many meals or as a simple, cooked fruit treat.

Description

Baked Apple Slices use peeled, thinly sliced apples tossed in melted butter combined with dark brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and salt. The mixture is baked until the apples are soft but still have shape, and the sugar-butter coating caramelizes. The cinnamon and ginger provide a gentle spicy warmth that enhances the natural sweetness of the apples without overpowering them. Baking at 350˚F allows the apples to soften evenly while developing a tender texture with a lightly caramelized surface.

This preparation works well as a dessert, served warm on its own or with additions like yogurt or ice cream. It can also act as a warm fruit side dish alongside breakfast or dinner dishes that complement apple flavors.

To ensure the best texture, firm apples should be used as they hold their shape during baking. Avoid mealy or overly ripe apples, which can become mushy and result in an undesirable texture once baked.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ¼ cup butter cubed, unsalted
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ginger
  • teaspoon salt
  • 6 apple about 2 ½ pounds, peeled and sliced into ¼-inch slices, medium

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Place the butter in an 8 x 11-inch baking dish and set in the oven for 5 minutes, until the butter is melted.
  2. Remove the dish from the oven, add brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger and salt and toss to combine. Add the apples and toss again to evenly coat the apples with the butter mixture.
  3. Bake for 40 minutes, tossing halfway through, until the apples are soft, but retain their shape.

Notes

  • Use firm apples to ensure slices retain their shape and texture when baked.
