Baked Apple Slices
Description
The Baked Apple Slices recipe uses peeled and sliced apples tossed with a blend of light brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and cornstarch to create a thickened sweet filling. Lemon juice brightens the flavor while optional walnuts introduce crunch. The mixture is spread in a buttered deep pan, dotted with butter pieces, and baked covered at 375°F for about an hour, being stirred periodically until the apples are tender.
The baking softens the apple slices evenly, resulting in a tender texture with a slightly sticky, flavorful sauce from the sugars and spices. The cornstarch helps the juices thicken, giving the dish a nice consistency. Butter enriches the dish and promotes a gentle browning on top.
This dessert can be served warm on its own or enhanced with a scoop of ice cream for creaminess contrast. It highlights the natural apple flavor with warmth from cinnamon and smoothness from butter. The walnuts provide optional crunchy contrast that pairs well with the tender fruit.
Peeling the apples is recommended to avoid tough skins. The apples may require different baking times based on variety, so checking doneness with a fork is advised. Leftover portions can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for 3 months, reheated gently to preserve texture and flavor. Additional warm spices like nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice can be added for variation.
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup light brown sugar tightly packed
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 4 to 5 large apple peeled, cored, and sliced about ⅓" - ½" thick, this is about 3 lbs. I like to use Honeycrisp or Gala
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice fresh
- ½ cup walnuts optional, chopped
- 3 tablespoons butter cut into 6 pieces, salted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F and lightly grease a deep 9x9 pan with butter.
- In a large bowl, stir together sugars, cinnamon, and cornstarch until well-combined.
- Add the apple slices and toss until well-coated. Sprinkle with lemon juice and add walnuts (if using) and stir again until well-combined.
- Transfer apple mixture into the prepared baking pan (be sure to scrape out all sugar/juice from the bowl) and dot with butter pieces.
- Cover pan with foil and transfer to oven. Bake for 60 minutes or until apples are tender when pierced with a fork, stirring every 15 minutes.
- Serve warm, top with ice cream if desired.
Notes
- Peel apples to avoid tough skin texture; different apple varieties may require shorter baking times, so check for tenderness early.
- Optional additional warm spices such as nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice can be included for flavor variation.
- Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, reheating gently on the stovetop or microwave.
- Freeze baked apple slices in a sealed bag for up to 3 months; thaw before reheating.
