Baked Apples
Description
In this recipe, apples such as red varieties or tart baking types like Granny Smith are cored deep to create space for the filling. The filling combines packed light brown sugar, softened butter, ground cinnamon, and chopped walnuts or pecans for texture and warmth. Apples are arranged in a baking dish with a small amount of water to maintain moisture and steamed gently in the oven at 350°F until tender.
During baking, the fruit softens but retains shape, while the filling melts and infuses the apples with a rich, buttery sweetness accented by cinnamon and nuts. The juices accumulate in the pan, and spooning this syrup over the apples enhances flavor and moisture. Serving with vanilla ice cream adds creaminess and contrast to the warm baked apples.
This classic dessert is simple to prepare and can be adapted for microwaving though oven baking is preferred for best texture. Variations include slicing apples for an apple crisp, offering alternative textures and toppings.
Ingredients
- 4 apple I like to use red apples, but baking apples, such as Granny Smith, work great to!, good-quality
- 1/4 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar , packed
- 2 Tablespoons butter , room temperature
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup water
- vanilla ice cream , for topping, optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Use a paring knife or apple corer to remove the stem and seeds from the apples, making a deep hole where the filling will go.
- Combine the brown sugar, butter and cinnamon in a small bowl and mix well to combine. Add the nuts. Spoon mixture evenly into each of the apples.
- Add 1/4 cup of water to a baking dish and place apples on top.
- Bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes.
- Spoon the sauce drippings from the pan over the apples. Serve with ice cream, if desired.
Notes
- Baking in the oven is preferred for best texture; microwave cooking is possible by microwaving apples 5–8 minutes until tender.
- Try slicing baked apples as an alternative for a crisp preparation.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for added creaminess and contrast.
