Baked Apples

Baked Apples are prepared by hollowing out whole apples and stuffing them with a mixture of flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, walnuts, and butter. Baking softens the apples while the topping becomes a golden, crunchy filling. The result is a warm dessert with tender fruit and a rich, nutty crumb topping. Serving with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce adds creaminess and extra sweetness.

Description

This Baked Apples recipe uses whole apples such as Granny Smith, Pink Lady, or Honeycrisp, which are cored and partially hollowed to create space for a flavorful filling. The stuffing combines all-purpose flour, brown sugar, rolled oats, cinnamon, finely chopped walnuts, a pinch of salt, and melted unsalted butter, forming a crumbly mixture tempered by the melted butter.

Apples are arranged standing upright in a baking dish with apple juice poured in the base to provide moisture. The filled apples bake at 375°F for about 40 minutes until tender. The filling develops a golden crust and a contrasting texture to the soft baked apples.

Optional toppings such as vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce complement the warm spiced apples for a comforting dessert. The recipe includes notes to ensure apples stand upright by leveling their base and packing filling generously. Care is advised when hollowing to avoid cutting through the bottom, preventing filling leakage during baking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 apple such as Granny Smith, Pink Lady or Honeycrisp
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup walnut finely chopped
  • salt pinch
  • 5 tablespoons butter melted, unsalted
  • vanilla ice cream optional, for serving
  • caramel sauce optional, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Pour the apple juice into the bottom of a large baking dish.
  2. Use a paring knife or melon baller to partially scoop out the inside of each apple. Arrange the apples in the baking dish.
  3. For the filling, put the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, walnuts and salt into a medium bowl, stir to combine. Pour in the melted butter. Using a fork, stir the ingredients until they are thoroughly combined.
  4. Spoon the filling into the cavity of each apple. Bake the apples for 40 minutes or until tender.
  5. Let cool for 5 minutes then serve, topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

  • Level the base of the apples so they stand upright without tipping over.
  • Hollow out apples beyond just the core, creating enough space for a generous filling.
  • Pack the filling firmly into the apples and mound some on top for more texture.
  • Avoid cutting through the bottom of the apples to prevent filling from leaking during baking.
