Baked Apples with Crumble
Description
This recipe starts by browning butter until nutty in flavor, then mixing it with vanilla extract, brown sugar, flour, rolled oats, and allspice to form a crumble filling. The apples are sliced in half and cored to create space for the filling.
The apples are placed cut-side up in a baking dish with hot water, sprinkled with cinnamon and additional brown sugar. The filling is spooned inside the apple halves. Covered and baked at 375ºF, they steam and soften over time. The uncovered baking in the final half hour allows the crumble topping to crisp and brown slightly.
The resulting dessert combines soft, juicy apple flesh with the crunchy, sweet oat topping accented by warm spices. Optional scoops of vanilla ice cream and drizzled caramel sauce add creamy and rich flavors, making this suitable for a comforting fall or winter dessert.
Utilizing apple cider instead of water can increase the intensity of apple flavor in the dish. Calorie count is an estimate, with one serving defined as half a stuffed apple without toppings.
Ingredients
For the Crumble Filling:
- 1/2 cup butter 4 ounces, unsalted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 grams
- ½ cup light brown sugar 100 grams
- ½ cup all-purpose flour 65 grams
- ¾ cup rolled oats 88 grams, old fashioned
- ½ teaspoon allspice
For the Apples:
- 4 large honeycrisp apples
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 grams
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar 28 grams
- ¾ cup water 6 ounces, hot
- caramel sauce for topping, optional
- Ice cream for topping, optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375ºF. Spray a 12" cast iron pan or a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray.
Make the Crumble Filling:
- In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium low heat until its bubbly and a dark brown color.
- Pour the butter into a medium sized bowl and mix with the vanilla extract, ½ cup brown sugar, flour, oats, and allspice. Set aside.
Prepare the apples:
- Slice each apple in half and remove the stems. Using a spoon, scoop out the core of each apple.
- Pour the hot water into the bottom of your 9x13 pan and place the apples inside, with the cut side up.
- Sprinkle the remaining 2 tablespoons brown sugar and cinnamon all across the apples. Then, stuff each apple half with the filling mixture.
- Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 25-30 minutes or until the apples are soft.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.
Notes
- Using apple cider instead of water enhances the apple flavor in the baked dish.
