Baked Caramel Apple Fritters

Baked Caramel Apple Fritters are made from refrigerated biscuit dough combined with diced apple pie filling, cinnamon, and melted butter. These doughy mounds bake to a golden, soft finish and are drizzled with melted caramel and cream, offering a rich autumn-inspired treat. The combination of spiced apple pieces and sweet caramel makes these fritters a flavorful snack or dessert, easily customizable in size and quantity.

Description

The recipe starts by dicing refrigerated biscuit dough and mixing it with finely chopped apple chunks from a jar of apple pie filling. The batter is flavored with cinnamon or apple pie spice and combined with the remaining filling sauce to moisten. Spoonfuls of this mixture are placed on a baking sheet, brushed lightly with melted butter, and baked until golden and cooked through.

Once cooled, a caramel sauce is prepared by melting unwrapped caramel candies with heavy cream in the microwave until smooth. This sauce can be drizzled or dipped alongside the fritters, providing a creamy, sweet accent to the soft, spiced apple and dough bites.

The fritters can be made in varying quantities: making 8, 10, or 12 pieces depending on size preference. Using a thick caramel sauce such as homemade salted caramel or a dense store-bought option enhances the coating and prevents runniness, complementing the baked fritters well.

Ingredients

Servings
  • refrigerated biscuit dough one 8-count tube
  • 21- ounce apple pie filling jar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon optional and to taste, or apple pie spice
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted, unsalted
  • 24 caramel candies unwrapped, square
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons heavy cream or caramel sauce may be substituted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat liner for easier cleanup; set aside.
  2. Open the biscuit dough, separate dough discs, dice each disc into about 10 pieces, and place in a large bowl; set aside.
  3. Open the apple pie filling, fish out the large apple chunks with a fork or your fingers, place them on a cutting board, dice the large apples into smaller bite-sized pieces, and add them to the bowl with the diced dough.
  4. Add the remaining apple pie filling sauce, optionally add cinnamon or apple pie spice, and stir to combine.
  5. Spoon heaping 1/4 cup-fulls of the batter onto the prepared baking sheet, then evenly distribute and spoon a bit of the melted butter over each mound of batter.
  6. Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until lightly golden browned and the dough is set and cooked through; set aside to cool.
  7. To a medium microwave-safe bowl, add the caramels, cream, and heat in 30-second bursts until the caramels have melted and can be stirred smooth.
  8. Evenly drizzle the caramel sauce over the apple fritters. Alternatively, store bought or homemade caramel sauce or salted caramel sauce* may be used instead.
  9. Apple fritters are best warm and fresh.

Notes

  • This recipe yields about 12 fritters, but you can adjust the quantity by making them larger or smaller.
  • Use a thick caramel sauce, like homemade salted caramel or Trader Joe's salted caramel, rather than thinner sauces meant for ice cream toppings.
