Baked Cinnamon Apples
Description
This dessert features two apple varieties—Granny Smith for tartness and Honeycrisp for sweetness and crispness—peeled, cored, and sliced thinly. Tossed with fresh lemon juice to prevent browning, the apples are coated with a spice and sugar mixture containing dark brown sugar, cinnamon, granulated sugar, nutmeg, cornstarch to thicken juices, and fine sea salt to balance flavors.
The apples are spread evenly in a buttered baking dish, covered with foil, and baked for 45 minutes, stirred every 15 minutes for even cooking. After uncovering, baking continues for 15 minutes to soften and bubble the apples and thicken the syrup. A cinnamon sugar topping is then sprinkled on to add a finishing sweet spice note.
Served warm, these baked apples offer a soft, tender texture with warm cinnamon and nutmeg aromas, balancing tart and sweet flavors. They pair well with vanilla ice cream or as a simple baked fruit dessert.
Leftover baked apples store well in the refrigerator up to 4 days in an airtight container and can be reheated in the oven to restore warmth and softness.
