Baked Cinnamon Apples

Baked Cinnamon Apples are a warm, soft fruit dessert made by coating sliced apples with cinnamon sugar and cornstarch, then baking with butter until tender and caramelized. Optional chopped walnuts add texture and flavor, while lemon juice brightens the mixture. The result is a cozy dessert that can be served warm, optionally with ice cream.

Description

This recipe uses sliced apples such as Honeycrisp or Gala, peeled and cored, then combined with a mixture of light brown sugar, white sugar, ground cinnamon, and cornstarch. The cornstarch helps thicken the cooking juices during baking, forming a soft sauce around the fruit.

The lemon juice adds a slight tang to balance the sweetness and helps prevent browning before baking. Butter is doted on top to add richness and encourage caramelization of the sugar and apples. Baking is done covered initially to trap moisture, with stirring every 15 minutes to ensure even cooking.

Once baked until tender and slightly caramelized, the apples can be served warm as is or topped with a scoop of ice cream for a comforting, sweet finish that works well as a dessert or warm snack.

Ingredients

Servings
  • cup light brown sugar tightly packed
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 4-5 apple cored, and sliced about ⅓" - ½" thick (this is about 3 lbs -- I like to use Honeycrisp or Gala, large, peeled
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup walnut chopped, optional
  • 3 Tablespoons butter salted, cut into 6 pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375F (190C) and lightly grease a deep 9x9 pan with butter.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together your sugars, cinnamon, and cornstarch until well-combined.
  3. Add the apples and toss until well coated. Sprinkle with lemon juice and add walnuts (if using) and stir again until well-combined.
  4. Transfer apple mixture into your prepared baking pan (be sure to scrape out all sugar/juice from the bowl) and dot with butter pieces.
  5. Cover pan with foil and transfer to 375F (190C) oven. Bake for 60 minutes or until apples are tender when pierced with a fork, stopping every 15 minutes to stir apples.
  6. Serve warm, top with ice cream if desired.
