Baked Fontina
Description
Baked Fontina is made with 1 1/2 pounds of fontina cheese, rind removed and cut into 1-inch cubes. These cheese pieces are arranged spaced out in a cast-iron pan and drizzled with olive oil for richness. A mixture of thinly sliced garlic, fresh minced thyme, and rosemary is sprinkled over the cheese, along with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
The pan is placed under a preheated broiler, positioned about 5 inches from the heat source on the bottom oven rack. Broiling for around six minutes melts the fontina, causing it to bubble and develop light browning on the surface, which adds flavor and a subtle crust. The aromatic herbs infuse the cheese during cooking.
This dish is best served immediately while warm and gooey, accompanied by chunks of crusty French baguette for dipping. The combination forms a rustic, flavorful cheese appetizer or snack, perfect for sharing.
The recipe is inspired by Ina Garten and emphasizes the use of high-quality olive oil and fresh herbs to complement the mild and creamy fontina cheese.
