Baked Gnocchi with Marinara, Mozzarella, and Fresh Basil
Description
This recipe uses pre-made ricotta or potato gnocchi cooked until they float to the surface in boiling salted water. The gnocchi are transferred to a baking dish and topped with chiffonade-cut fresh basil leaves, layering in herbal brightness.
Marinara sauce is spooned evenly over the basil and gnocchi, providing acidity and tomato flavor that pairs well with the mild gnocchi. The dish is finished with a generous amount of shredded or sliced mozzarella cheese which melts during baking, forming a creamy, stringy topping that ties the ingredients together.
Baking at 400°F for 10 to 15 minutes gently melds the flavors and thoroughly heats the dish. Cooling briefly before serving lets it settle slightly for easier portioning. Additional fresh basil may be used as a garnish to accent the fresh herb flavor.
You can assemble the dish up to three days ahead and refrigerate it before baking, adjusting the bake time accordingly. Making gnocchi from scratch can reduce cost, and plain basil leaves can replace chiffonade-cut if preferred without losing much flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 lb gnocchi ricotta or potato- either will do, pre-made
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 1/2 cup basil cut chiffonade or chopped, plus more for garnish, fresh
- 8 oz. mozzarella shredded (or sliced/torn if using fresh, whole milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Cook gnocchi by placing carefully into boiling salted water. Remove with a slotted spoon when they float to the top and place into a medium-sized baking dish.
- Sprinkle fresh cut basil (1/2 cup) on top of the gnocchi.
- Spoon marinara sauce (2 cups) evenly on top of the basil.
- Sprinkle cheese (8 oz.) evenly on top of the sauce.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes, until cheese is completely melted.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with extra basil if desired.
Notes
- This dish can be assembled and refrigerated for up to 3 days before baking; increase bake time and cover with foil when baking cold.
- Homemade gnocchi can reduce the cost but pre-made works well for convenience.
- Fresh basil can be added as whole leaves if preferred to chiffonade cut.
