Baked Ravioli

Baked Ravioli combines frozen cheese ravioli layered with a seasoned ground beef and tomato sauce mixture, topped with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, then baked until bubbly and browned. This hands-off casserole skips boiling ravioli, offering a savory dish with rich tomato flavors and melted cheese.

Description

Baked Ravioli assembles layers of frozen cheese ravioli with a homemade meat sauce made from browned ground beef, diced onions, garlic, marinara sauce, tomato sauce, and dried oregano. This layered casserole is topped with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese to create a rich, cheesy finish.

The recipe cooks the frozen ravioli directly in the oven without prior boiling, making the process more straightforward and saving time. Covering the dish with foil during the initial baking stage ensures even cooking and prevents drying out, followed by uncovered baking to brown and bubble the cheese topping. The result is a hearty baked pasta dish with tender ravioli enveloped in a savory meat sauce and melted cheese.

Baked Ravioli works as a family-style main dish and can be divided into smaller portions or frozen for later use. It stores well refrigerated for a few days and can be reheated, making it convenient for meal planning or leftovers.

The seasoning includes dried oregano for herbal notes, while the combination of two tomato sauces enriches the sauce base with depth and acidity.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ onion diced, medium
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce jar
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dried
  • 25 ounce cheese ravioli frozen, package
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 9 x 13’’ inch baking dish (or two 8-inch dishes with cooking spray) set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat brown the ground beef and diced onions. During the last minute of cooking add the minced garlic. When ground beef is cooked through drain grease off.
  3. In a mixing bowl combine the cooked ground beef, marinara sauce, tomato sauce and oregano. Spread a thin layer of this mixture across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  4. Arrange half of the frozen ravioli in a single layer over the sauce in the baking dish.
  5. Top with half of the remaining marinara sauce mixture and half of the shredded Mozzarella cheese.
  6. Repeat layers then sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  7. Place the baking dish in a preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil from the baking dish and cook for an additional 25 minutes or until bubbly and hot in the center.
  8. Remove from the oven and let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Frozen ravioli can be baked directly without boiling, simplifying preparation.
  • You can make this casserole ahead and freeze it up to two months before baking.
  • Dividing the recipe into smaller pans allows for frozen portions or more convenient serving sizes.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for two to three days.
