Baked Tortilla Chips

Report
Baked Tortilla Chips made from flour tortillas coated with olive oil and lime juice deliver a light crisp snack seasoned simply with sea salt. Baking at a moderate temperature crisps the chips evenly without frying, with a quick flip halfway to ensure consistent texture. These chips can be customized with various seasonings like Mexican blends or smoky spices, and are suitable as a base for dips or toppings.

Description

Baked Tortilla Chips use flour tortillas brushed with an olive oil and lime juice mixture before being cut into triangles and baked until crisp. The application of oil helps the chips brown and develop a slight chew before crisping in the oven, while lime juice adds subtle brightness. The seasoning is minimal with just sea salt, but the notes encourage experimentation with spices like smoked paprika or cayenne for variation.

The baking time is roughly 10-12 minutes at 170°C (325°F), with a turn halfway to promote even crisping. The baking tray type and batch order affect baking speed, so close attention is needed near the end to avoid burning. Flour or corn tortillas can be used based on preference or dietary needs.

These chips pair well with salsas, guacamole, or can be eaten plain. They store well for up to a week in an airtight container, making them a convenient homemade snack alternative.

The notes explain that brushing the oil before cutting helps ease slicing and that adjusting the seasoning is encouraged. Thinner tortillas or darker trays bake faster, so timing must be monitored carefully. The chips crisp up quicker with each new batch due to residual heat in the baking tray.

Notes

  • Brush oil on tortillas before cutting to ease slicing, but avoid over-oiling to prevent sogginess.
  • Experiment with seasonings like Mexican spice blends, smoked paprika, or cayenne for variety.
  • Use flour or corn tortillas depending on dietary preference; corn tortillas make the chips gluten free.
  • Bake times vary by tortilla type and bakeware; watch closely to prevent burning, especially with dark trays.
  • Subsequent batches bake faster as the tray remains hot; adjust timing accordingly.
  • Store baked chips in an airtight container for up to one week.
