Baltimore Peppermint Lemon Sticks

Baltimore Peppermint Lemon Sticks are a unique treat where lemons are sliced and impaled with peppermint candy sticks, serving as edible straws to sip the lemon juice. Pushing peppermint sticks into lemon halves extracts juice through the porous candy over time, offering a tart and sweet refreshing experience. This preparation transforms simple ingredients into a nostalgic snack or refreshment.

Description

This recipe involves preparing fresh lemons by rolling to release juice, then slicing each lemon in half with flat ends for stability. Peppermint candy sticks, preferably traditional peppermint sticks rather than candy canes, are gently pushed into the center of each lemon half, sometimes requiring a small incision to ease insertion. The peppermint serves as a channel to draw lemon juice through the candy stick when sucked on, delivering a tart juice lightly flavored with peppermint sweetness.

The lemon halves act both as holders and juice sources, combining citrus tartness with the cool flavor of peppermint. The process takes some time for the juice to flow but offers a playful and unusual way to consume lemon juice. This can be served as a casual snack or novelty refreshment.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 lemon plural
  • 8 peppermint candy sticks either King Leo or Bob's Big Stripes brands, not candy canes, old-fashioned

Instructions

  1. Roll each lemon on the counter with a little pressure from your hand to break up some of the pulp so it's extra juicy.
  2. Make a small slice at each end of the lemon so there is a flat surface on both ends. Slice the lemons in half.
  3. Stick a peppermint stick into the center of each lemon, pushing it to the bottom. You may need to make a small "X" in the center of each lemon with a sharp knife if the lemon stick doesn't push in easily. Use the lemon stick like a straw to suck up the lemon juice. It may take a bit for it to start working, but the juice will eventually flow up through the porous candy.
